Declare Juneteenth Holiday - YES

I voted in favor of a proclamation declaring June 19, 2024, as Juneteenth Day of Observance. This proclamation recognizes the significance of Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. It marks the day on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the last enslaved people in the state, over two years after the Proclamation was issued—a watershed moment in the history of America’s continuing quest for freedom.

The proclamation acknowledges the importance of Juneteenth as a celebration of freedom, the abolishment of slavery, and the contributions of African Americans to our society. It also encourages the residents of Corte Madera to reflect on this vital part of American history and the enduring impact of African American heritage and culture.

This proclamation urges the community to observe Juneteenth with education and reflection, recognizing the ongoing significance of this day in the pursuit of justice and equality for all. Happy Juneteenth, everyone!
