More than a third of global carbon emissions come from buildings, and In 2022, we took a significant step toward combating climate change by adopting an ordinance prohibiting natural gas infrastructure in new buildings, and promoting all-electric construction. This move was part of a broader effort to reduce the town's carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future. Unfortunately, a misguided federal court decision later overturned our ordinance, dealing a heavy blow to our efforts.
Despite this setback, Corte Madera remains committed to sustainability and is actively pursuing new initiatives to make buildings more energy-efficient. In response to the court ruling, the Town is introducing stricter energy requirements for certain single-family homes. These new regulations will enhance energy efficiency by improving standards for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in new buildings and major renovations.
Our updated rules are designed to offer homeowners and builders flexibility in achieving greater energy efficiency. While going all-electric is one option, it is not the only path forward. By providing a range of options, we aim to lower residents' energy bills, reduce our carbon footprint, and continue our fight against climate change. The changes to our energy requirements reflect our determination to adapt and innovate. This ongoing effort underscores the importance of local action in addressing global challenges.
